Wondering what kinds of diseases an internist is able to treat? If you are currently suffering from a disease and looking into your treatment options, then finding out more about internal medicine is a great idea. An internist focuses on treating many diseases and can work with their patients on a short-term or long-term basis. Some internists will choose to focus on a particular illness or part of the body, which makes learning more about a particular internist highly recommended in order to understand what their specialties may be.
Why an internist and not a general practitioner?
The reason why more and more people are choosing to have any diseases they are diagnosed with taken care of by an internist is because this is their medical area of focus. They have received the exact type of medical training necessary to diagnose and treat adults who have specific diseases. They are also highly trained in offering their patients disease prevention services, e.g., cancer screening, cardiac disease screening and diabetes screening.
Diseases that an internist treats
The following is a list of some of the more common diseases that an internist can treat. According to the American College of Physicians, at least three of the seven or more years of an internist’s training are dedicated to learning how to prevent, diagnose and treat diseases that specifically affect adults, which qualifies them to practice internal medicine.
Disease #1 – asthma. Asthma is a chronic disease that narrows one's airway, which means that there is going to be less air flow to the lungs.
Disease #2 – cancer. Cancer is a general term used to describe many diseases caused by the growth of abnormal cells.
Disease #3 – diabetes. Diabetes is a disease that affects a patient’s blood sugar levels and needs to be managed very carefully on a daily basis.
Disease #4 – arthritis. Arthritis is a general term used to describe various types of joint-related diseases.
Disease #5 – cardiac disease. Cardiovascular disease refers to different types of heart diseases.
