How to Find the Right General Practitioner

Posted on: May 16, 2018

A general practice physician is also known as a primary care doctor or a primary care physician. Typically, people rely on us, their family doctor, for every possible element that impacts their health. Whether it is a broken bone, a common cold, or a sports physical, we are who the family turns to.

How to find a primary care physician or a general practitioner

If living in our area, schedule an appointment with our office. One of the most important decisions that a family can make is choosing their general practitioner. We provide quality and compassionate care – two things that are essential for long-term health.

For anyone not living in our area, here are tips for finding the right doctor:

#1. Ask a friend

One of the best ways to find a general practitioner>, particularly for families, is to ask friends, family and coworkers. They can pass along information and answer questions about their experience.

#2. Ask for a referral

If moving, ask a current physician, dentist, chiropractor, etc. Since the referral comes from a trusted source, it is likely that a family seeking a referral from a current provider will end up with a doctor that they are satisfied with.

#3. Hospital access

It is very common for hospitals to offer a referral service to patients. If there is a large hospital nearby and the family has a need to go to the hospital, it is a good idea to use the hospital referral service. This service can provide patients with the names of staff doctors who meet certain criteria. This allows a patient to choose a specific doctor based on things like gender, experience and their location.

#4. Referrals from health insurance

With health insurance, it is critical to identify which doctors are in-network doctors and which doctors are out of network. This makes a significant difference in how much of the treatment cost your health insurance plan will pay. Assigning a primary care physician, or general practitioner to a policy is often the first step in the HMO plans.

However, PCP plans often handle any referrals to a specialist. Due to this, patients end up meeting with a particular doctor from the very beginning.

If you don't have a general practitioner

If you do not have a general practitioner for your family it is recommended that you find one as soon as possible. We are excepting new patients and would be delighted to schedule an appointment for you to come in and meet with our doctor.
